A History of Ättlingar
1883
At the age of 15, Carl Eklund walks to Frederikstad, Norway from Dalsland, Sweden to begin his apprenticeship in cabinet-making and woodworking.
1890
Carl moves to the United States to join his brother Anders Magnus in Chicago. He makes jewelry cases for the famous Italian jeweler, Visconti.
1895
Carl Eklund begins his cabinet making shop in the South
Side of Chicago.
1903-1907
Carl marries another Swede, Esther Regina Peterson,
who also landed in Chicago. They have two children,
Carl Hilding and Sara Christina (Sally).
1917
The Eklund family purchases a building and barn at 375
Park Avenue in Glencoe, Illinois for the family to reside
and run the family business.
1920s-1970s
Both Carl Hilding and Sally graduate from Northwestern
University and join the family business. Sally, becomes an
interior designer and Carl Hilding becomes a master
craftsman. Esther produces soft furnishings. The family uses the barn as their dedicated workshop.
2000
Sally donates 375 Park Avenue property to the Glencoe
Historical Society. The property is named the Eklund
History Center and Garden.
2024
Siri Eklund, Carl Hilding's granddaughter, launches
Ättlingar (which means descendants in Swedish) with
award winning interior designer, Meghan Heeter.
